FRIDAY: An invitation to A Promise

The invitation to experience rivers of living waters is age-old. God had made clear that a time would come when His spirit would be poured on all flesh [meaning all of His people]. Joel 2:28-29 captures it this way: 'And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”

Jesus brought this promise closer when He said “those who believed in him were later to receive” Him. He told His disciples that He would ask God the Father to send the gift [Acts 1:4-5].

The Lord Jesus was committed to making sure it happened because it was a promise. And true to His word, the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost. The apostles were so convinced of the continuity of this promise to all other believers that Peter declared in Acts 2:38-39: Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you wil lreceive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off — for all whom the Lord our God will call."

The Holy Spirit is a gift promised to the believer. We are not orphans! With Jesus about to go into heaven, He assured us that when “the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.”
