In John 4:13-14, Jesus spoke to the woman at the well, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." it is true that people usually seek that which will satisfy, even temporarily. But as Christ made it clear, temporal satisfaction isn’t the deal; He offers eternal fulfillment to those who come to Him.
As we continue reaching out to people held in bondage to drugs and substance abuse—and all the associated consequences, we need to remember that only the River of God can quench their thirst. Rehabilitation programs are void in themselves. Great counseling skills are insufficient. Withdrawing these friends from the toxic environment does not uproot that toxic environment from their hearts. Only rivers of living water can uproot the toxic work of Satan in them, quench their thirst, and give them a new thirst—a thirst for God.
Ephesians 5:18-19 exhorts, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” Drunkenness, alongside other forms of drug hallucinations, lead to sin and death, while the infilling experience of the Holy Spirit results in righteousness, peace and joy.
