Num. 11:24-26: So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said.
He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the Tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again. 26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the Tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp.
When Moses was overwhelmed with ministry, the LORD asked him to bring the elders of Israel—a team of 72, to receive of the Spirit that was upon Moses, so that they could carry out the work alongside Moses. This was a great blessing because now Moses would be more effective, instead of doing everything by himself. The burden became much lighter!
When Jesus wanted His church to grow, His first duty was to appoint leaders for the job. The twelve disciples would form part of the team, and each one of them had a special task to accomplish. Apart from the regular teachings on serving one another [John 13:14], loving each other [John 13:34], servant leadership [Matt. 20:20-28], among others, Jesus insisted on their need to wait for Rivers of living waters—The Holy Spirit, to come upon them in order to flow through them [John 7:37-39; Acts 1:4-8]. It is no wonder that these men accomplished great work when they began their service to the Lord.
PRAYER: As a church, we desire that our leaders may exemplify biblical leadership at their best. We pray that we may all experience the Holy Spirit, and have one purpose and the right motivation for service.
