We are Led to resist the Tempter and Temptation with the Help of the Holy Spirit.
When tempted, Jesus used all the available resources from the Father to overcome temptation and the tempter. He used the Word of God. Three times He said, “It is written…” [Matt. 4:4-11]. But it was not mere quoting of the scripture that worked; it was because He was Spirit-empowered. The Word of God works only when wielded by the Spirit. The Word is the Sword of the Spirit [Eph. 6:17b]. This explains why people were later amazed at His teaching, “because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law” (Matt 7:29).
Jesus not only overcame Satan three times; He overcame Himself too. He overcame the lust of the flesh [the need to turn stone into bread], the lust of the eye [the need to claim the Kingdoms of Earth], and the pride of life [the need to prove a point about an angelic presence and care for Him]. We are tempted by the very appetites! Our wicked world brings adverse temptations upon us: For everything in the world — the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does — comes not from the Father but from the world (1 John 2:16-17).
Just like the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus to stand up in the face of temptation, so does He do to all who soak in Him. It is a contradiction to be filled with the Holy Spirit and be full of wickedness!
We soak in the Holy Spirit because He gives us the power to resist Satan and all his forces of evil, and all manner of temptations that come our way. When tempted, God is committed not only to shaping your character but also to making sure that you stand. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 affirms, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” You can stand because of the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life.
